The Tampa Bay Chamber affirms the spirit of the Resolution adopted by the Tampa City Council acknowledging Tampa’s history which contributed to a complex system of racially motivated discrimination against African Americans. The Tampa Bay Chamber would like to thank both Mayor Castor and Councilman Orlando Gudes for their leadership on this Resolution. While this Resolution will not fix every economic or social ill overnight, it does recognize systematic wrongs, and makes clear the community’s responsibility in correcting those wrongs. The Resolution states that the City of Tampa will establish a Reconciliation Commission with a mission of studying and developing proposals for redress of the enduring negative effects of the institutions of slavery and subsequent systemic discrimination. The Tampa Bay Chamber looks forward to joining with community stakeholders to forge a productive path from reconciliation on to repairing and establishing overdue restorative, and equitable partnerships.
