All Children’s Hospital Launches New Program to Help Students with Disabilities Gain Work Experience

All Children’s Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine is launching a new program to help students with disabilities gain marketable job skills. Project SEARCH is a school-to-work internship program for students ages 18-22 with disabilities, made possible through the efforts of All Children’s Hospital, PARC, Florida Vocational Rehabilitation and Pinellas County Schools. The students will work with a team, including their family, a special education teacher, job coach and vocational rehabilitation counselor, to create employment goals that will help them transition from school to the workplace. Students will participate in a three-week orientation followed by three 10-week internship rotations in three departments at the hospital, including Environmental Services, Food Services and Rehabilitation Services. Students will begin their day with an hour-long class, spend up to five hours learning skills while on the job, then return to the classroom to reflect on their day, discuss challenges and evaluate progress. The goal is for each Project SEARCH graduate to find a local job utilizing the work skills learned at All Children's Hospital. Project SEARCH originally started at Cincinnati Children's Hospital and has grown to 286 sites across 42 states and four countries. This is the first Project SEARCH program on Florida’s west coast.
