Fundraising Efforts Provide First-Ever Playground to Tampa Elementary School

LTMosi1 This year, the Leadership Tampa graduating class of 2012 had a philanthropic goal to help the hundreds of current and future students at the MOSI Partnership School have a chance to enjoy an on-site school playground. After a year of fundraising efforts, Leadership Tampa recently presented the school with a $47,000 check to build this playground. “I know that this playground will mean the world to our existing and future students,” said Ann Perez, Principal of the MOSI Partnership School, who was on hand to accept the donation. “A place for children to play and develop social skills is essential to development.” A Title 1 School with 95 percent of its students qualifying for free lunch, the MOSI Partnership School is one of only two schools in the county without a playground. The Leadership Tampa class became aware of this need during its Education Day class and worked throughout the year to raise the funds to help. “When we learned that the school did not have a proper playground, we knew something had to be done,” said Christy Young, a Leadership Tampa member who spearheaded the fundraising efforts. “I am so thrilled that our class had a vision, stepped up, fundraised and brought this playground project to life.” These funds were raised through individual giving within the Leadership Tampa class, and through the companies and organizations represented by class members. This effort was also made possible thanks to a matching grant from Hillsborough County Public Schools. Construction on the new playground has begun and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Once the construction is complete, Leadership Tampa is also planning a ‘sweat equity’ project that will focus on landscaping and other needs around the school. About Leadership Tampa Since 1971, Leadership Tampa, a program of the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce, has cultivated future leaders of the Tampa Bay community by educating its participants on the many issues, opportunities, challenges and perspectives among leaders in Tampa and Hillsborough County. Many graduates of the program have gone on to take expanded leadership roles in the community, as well as in their own organizations.
