Wednesday, November 13th the Women of Influence Committee helped to put together a Pearls of Wisdom event that featured Port Tour of Tampa Bay with Keynote Speaker Captain Carolyn Kurtz. Ultimate Medical Academy sponsored this exciting event and had almost 30 employees attend the event to learn about Captain Kurtz and Port Tampa Bay.

Originally from NY, Captain Kurtz attended the US Merchant Marine Academy. Upon graduation, she went to sea as 3rd Mate with Maritime Overseas Corporation. She received an unlimited Master license in 1992, qualifying her to captain ships of any size. In 1995 she was accepted as the first woman in Florida into the Tampa Bay Pilots training program.

She has served as co-manager and training coordinator of TBPA and as Secretary of the Florida Harbor Pilots Association. She currently serves as Chair of the Florida Board of Pilot Commissioners and as Chair of the Navigation Safety Advisory Council (NAVSAC), an advisory board to the USCG. She has been honored to receive some very special awards: Woman of Distinction (Girl Scouts), Trailblazer Award (Women’s Transportation Council), Breaking the Glass Ceiling Award (Jewish Museum of Florida), International Person of the Year (Tampa Bay Women in Transportation). In 2018 she was admitted to the Athena Society.

Carolyn provided first-hand experience and insight to the attendees that went on the Port Tour.
